A Basic Guide to LGBTQ Issues

Notes About Finding Books, Videos, CDs, and DVDs

Books are best searched in 2 places: The library catalog and WorldCat.

1)  The UALR Ottenheimer Library online catalog allows you to quickly and easily search for books, as well as other materials, that the UALR Ottenheimer Library owns.

Because everyday language does not always agree with cataloging terminology (Library of Congress Subject Headings) the wording you are using, like homosexual, may not be the best terms for searching in the catalog

When searching the online catalog, recommended Subject Headings include the following:

  • Lesbians
  • Bisexuals
  • Gays
  • Transgenderism or Transgender People
  • Queer Theory
  • Homosexuality

Additional subject headings are frequently offered and connected to the appropriate catalog records.

2) The UALR Ottenheimer Library will not have every book or journal you desire, but we are able to obtain many from other libraries. The best means of searching for materials not in the UALR Ottenheimer Library is WorldCat, also known as OCLC.

WorldCat provides information on worldwide library holdings of books, periodicals, theses, dissertations, media and other materials. If you know of an item you need that the UALR Ottenheimer Library does not own, you can search it here to see which other libraries have copies.  Searching can be done by author, title, subject, or keyword.

In many cases, our Interlibrary Loan department can obtain the book for you from another library.
