Finding Books

SEARCH Library Catalog

When searching the UALR Ottenheimer Library online catalog, the Library of Congress (LC) Subject Headings uses Drug Abuse or Substance Abuse.  It might also be helpful to focus on the type of abuse, the drug being abused, or treatment programs.

    Among possible topics would be:

  • Medication Abuse
  • Heroin Abuse
  • Cocaine Abuse
  • Drug Abuse Counseling
  • Drug Abuse Treatment

The concept of Drug Abuse can also be narrowed by geographic areas, like nations or states.

Borrow from Another Library / Interlibrary Loan

There will be times when your topic of interest is not well represented in the book collections of the UALR Ottenheimer Library. That is not a reason to give up. It just requires that you search other libraries for materials and possibly request them via Interlibrary Loan.

One of the best places to start searching other libraries is a database known as WorldCat. This database searches the holdings of thousands of libraries worldwide, many of whom will loan books to this library.

Government Publications

The online catalog includes the majority of the materials from the federal depository collections.

The US government publications received in paper format are on the 3rd of the UALR Ottenheimer Library. Most of these materials can be checked out. The reports distributed on microfiche are also available by request on the 3rd floor. Copies can be made from the microfiche.

The US publications are classified and shelved by the agency that wrote them, rather than the subject of the publication. As a result, it might be necessary to look in several sections of the collection to find all the materials.Below are sample publications that are available:

Assessing U.S. Drug Policy in the Americas
Call Number: US Doc Y 4.F 76/1: 111-46

Drug Control Strategies in San Diego

Statistical Abstract of the United States  - This is the broadest compilation of statistics compiled by the federal government. Numerous tables are provided that include crime and violence. Unfortunately, each year provides slightly different tables and some years a set of numbers may not be updated because the government has not done a newer study on the topic. However, it does provide the longest run of criminal statistics of all the library materials.
