Guide to APA Style

Important Reminder

This guide is designed to be a learning tool. It does not substitute for the Publication Manual OR your instructor's requirements.

Important Editing Note: This guide was originally created before the 7th edition of the APA style guide was released in 2020. We are currently updating this guide to reflect the 7th edition standards, so parts of the guide will be labeled with 6TH EDITION INFORMATION: NEEDS TO BE UPDATED to indicate sections that still need to be updated. Your professor wants you to use the 7th edition to create your citations, so if you have questions about a section that has not been updated yet, we recommend the following:

  1. Check out the Style and Grammar Guidelines available on the official APA Style Website
  2. Check out a physical copy of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association: The Official Guide to APA Style (7th ed.) available at the Ottenheimer Library circulation desk
  3. Reach out to a librarian at the Ottenheimer Library through the Ask Us feature linked here

Reference List: Always include state, province, or country

6TH EDITION INFORMATION: NEEDS TO BE UDPATED

The 6th edition of the Publication Manual requires that the name of the state, province, or country be included with all citations in the reference list.

Reference List: Listing author names

6TH EDITION INFORMATION: NEEDS TO BE UPDATED

According to the 6th edition of the Publication Manual:

If your source has one to seven authors, list the names of all authors.

If your source has eight or more authors, list the names of the first six authors. After the name of the sixth author, use an ellipsis (three periods), then list the name of the last author.
