Guide to APA Style

Important Reminder

This guide is designed to be a learning tool. It does not substitute for the Publication Manual OR your instructor's requirements.

Important note for Spring 2020:  This guide covers the 6th edition of the APA Style.  Purdue OWL expects to have their site updated to reflect the 7th edition changes by early spring of 2020.  We will update our guide after Purdue OWL is updated.

Reference List: Always include state, province, or country

The 6th edition of the Publication Manual requires that the name of the state, province, or country be included with all citations in the reference list.

Reference List: Listing author names

According to the 6th edition of the Publication Manual:

If your source has one to seven authors, list the names of all authors.

If your source has eight or more authors, list the names of the first six authors. After the name of the sixth author, use an ellipsis (three periods), then list the name of the last author.
