Used as a way to assess student learning before a library instruction class to see where students are at when it comes to information literacy skills or conducting research.

Flipped Content for Library Instruction Modules

Flipped content allows students to access material before their library instruction class. The purpose is to not only help make sure all students are coming into the class on the same playing field but it also gives students the opportunity to get an idea of what will be covered in their library instruction class.

Module 1: Searching Basics
Students will learn how to locate general information using the library's search tool and Google. They will be introduced to basic ways to limit searches to specific types of information sources. While Wikipedia may not be a citable source, students will learn how to use Wikipedia to find background information and references to academic sources.

Module 2: Methods for Approaching Research
Students will learn how to generate keywords and use Boolean operators for more efficient searches. Students will learn how to use search terms to narrow and broaden a research area. Students will understand that searching requires mental flexibility and creativity. Students will participate in activities to refine a research focus.

Module 3: Evaluating & Examining Online Sources
Students will evaluate different source types to determine reliability and trustworthiness based on authority, timeliness, appropriateness, and other characteristics like purpose and intended audience. Students will participate in activities that will allow them to critically assess information regardless of where and how the information is created.

Students will learn how to select general or subject specific databases that are more appropriate for certain types of information. Students will build on existing knowledge and skills used in everyday situations, applying them in an academic context. This lesson is designed for practical application through hands-on activities and peer engagement.
