POLS 4341 - African Politics

General Online Catalog Tips

In addition to writing down the location and call number, remember to check the "Status" column before you go to the shelf. Some books are not on the shelf because they are checked out or recently returned and this will be noted on the screen.

If you cannot find a book you are looking for, please ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk.

If you like to search late an night or spend a limited amount of time on campus, it is possible to request books through the online catalog and have them held for you at the Circulation Desk. Select the Request option on the left side and supply the requested information about your account. Please allow 24 hours for the book to be pulled and waiting for you.

Books about People

Many times, specific events in political history revolve around a person or group of people. Try the name of a particular explorer, leader, or any other person involved in an event in the nation's history. Remember that people must be searched as subjects, using the last name first.

     Nyerere, Julius Kambage

     Mobutu, Sese Seko

For some people, the year of birth and/or death will also be included in the subject. It is not necessary to know those years to search for a person.

Books written about mutliple people can be searched with broader subjects like:

     Statesmen - Africa

     Africa, Sub-Saharan -- Biography

Books about Nations

Books on nations, cultures, and international organizations can be searched in the online catalog using several Library of Congress (LC) Subject Headings. The simplest choice is the name of the country, culture, or organization. If there are several books on the topic, more specific headings will be listed:

     Africa - Politics and Government

     Angola - Economic Conditions

     Namibia - Social Condition

If you are more interested in a specific topic in several countries, search the topic and then divide it geographically, by individual nations or regions:

     Education  - Africa Sub Saharan

     Drug Control - Africa

     Political parties -- Africa

WorldCat and Interlibrary Loan

The best means of searching for materials not in Ottenheimer Library is WorldCat, also known as OCLC, which provides information on worldwide library holdings of books, periodicals, theses, dissertations, media, and other material. If you know of a book you need that the UALR Ottenheimer Library does not own, you can search it here to see which other libraries have copies. In many cases, our Interlibrary Loan department can obtain the book for you from another library, but it could take up to two weeks to receive the book.

*Interlibrary Loan is not a service to be left until the last moment.  Books are shipped via library rate with the U.S. Postal Service and that is not the fastest rate they offer.*
