HIED 8342 - Governance and Policy Making in Higher Ed

Congressional Sources

Congressional Publications is a commercial database that covers bills, laws and legislation from 1970 to present. It also provides information about members of Congress and their voting records. This is an excellent place to research topics involving federal funding or changes in federal law.

Catalog of Government Publications

The GPO Catalog of Government Publications indexes government publications from the U.S. Superintendent of Documents, the publisher of materials from all federal agencies. Most materials published by the Department of Education and Congress will be included in here. Those of more recent dates might have links to online files.

The online file will index materials from 1976 to present. Historic volumes its predecessors, the Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications, and the United States Government Publications Monthly Catalog can be found on the third floor.

House and Senate Committee Websites

Congressional Committees are one of the best places to get up-to-date information on how Congress is looking at a subject impacting the nation.  Most Congressional hearings include testimony from experts in the field from around the nation, as well as questions from the Committee members.

Many Committees today post their hearings and schedules on their websites. Older hearings can be found in paper or fiche format in the library collection or as part of the Congressional Sources database.

Committees that might address issues dealing with education are listed below for both houses of Congress.

- The Committees on Appropriations are the originating location for most bills and laws that assign federal dollars to projects and agencies so funding questions can be researched there.

- The Education Committees oversee the federal regulation of education at all levels as well as numerous means of funding fot it.

- The Science Committees might offer insight into grant funding that is done on college and university campuses.
